... but I will also say that replacing the dishwasher with a Bosch was a great move because of the proximity of the kitchen to the living area - it was so quiet ...

We have a similar set-up, open plan kitchen/living area. When our dishwasher went kaput, we bought a Miele. First time we ran it, had to keep checking to see if it was running it was so quiet. What is funnier, it has a quiet mode. Tried that for kicks once, couldn't hear it at all. The quiet mode mostly has to do with how it dries so it takes about twice as long so we don't use it.

And yes, much more expensive but worth it.
