1) Two different agencies were used (one for each). Can we obtain a free report from each?

Yes.

2) Can I write for the reports instead of calling? It's liek pulling teeth to get hubby dear to call, but I can have him sign a couple of letters in a heartbeat, throw on some stamps and away they go...

You might be able to call for him. I got turned down for a card earlier this year and the credit agency (can't remember which one) that I called simply had a touch tone system. Apparently their computer was set up to know that I had recently been rejected for a card and after confirming some information via touch tone, it spat out my credit report and sent it to me. Gotta love automation.
