1. Vote the neocons out of power.

2. Re-establish good relationships with our long-term and most reliable allies.

3. Work with those allies to accomplish four strategic goals:

a. Disrupting Al Quaeda cells and copycat cells worldwide through concentrating and vastly improving intelligence capabilities.

b. Address in a meaningful way the Palestinian problem, particularly by means of insisting that Israel remove all settlements on Palestinian territory and proposing a realistic plan for a Palestinian state (not the non-contiguous joke they previously proposed), backed by the threat of discontinuing aid to Israel.

c. Address seriously the need to develop alternative energy sources in order to ensure that the world economy can survive without mideast oil.

d. Stop supporting tyrants and oppressive governments worldwide. For nations like Saudi Arabia, we must insist that the wealth we provide for their monarchy be shared with the people, for instance. There will be a serious problem, of course, in dealing with Pakistan, inasmuch as they have nuclear weapons and a radical and popular opposition. We will need to work exceptionally hard, diplomatically, in order to ensure that these weapons do not fall into the hands of the extremists. This can only be achieved through improving the lot of the average Pakistani such that they no longer wish to support Al Qaeda and the crazies.

4. Pass legislation permitting Medicare to negotiate with drug companies for low priced drugs for seniors.

5. Address the health care problem in this nation which is hobbling our businesses, costing more than any health care system in the western world and providing substandard and insufficient access for our citizens.

6. Get the religious right out of government and back into their pulpits where they belong. No further taxpayer subsidies to religious organizations. Ancillary issues: a) An individual's body belongs to the individual who inhabits it, so both abortion and end-of-life decisions belong to the pregnant woman and the dying human being and their doctors. b) Stem cell research is a scientific issue, and scientists should be the ones to make the decision about what efforts should be pursued. Government should stop lying to the public about the issue. Stem cells are not people. They're cells.

7. Address global warming in a meaningful way -- and all environmental issues -- or we may not have a planet in 100 years to worry about.

8. Re-affirm America's committment to the Geneva Conventions and America's committment to human rights and the moral and humane treatment of all human beings, whatever their suspected guilt.

9. Set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq within the next 12 months. We've screwed it up, folks. There's nothing more we can do now to prevent the inevitable except for really canny diplomacy.

10. Seek a Constitutional Amendment which states that money does not equal "free speech," and which provides for public financing of all future campaigns -- no private or coporate donations permitted, ever. Further, either provide for bipartisan and constant testing of electronic voting equipment or outlaw it entirely. No future elections should be decided upon either who has the most money or who has the power to hack electronic voting machines.

A start. Just a start. But this is where I would start.
