It depends where the sensor is in the vehicle and how easy/hard it is to get to. Your best bet would be to call a dealership or two in your area.

2. What is the purpose of the sensor?

Probably has something to do with engine combustion. If it's just the sensor, I wouldn't be too concerned.

3. Would failure of the sensor cause engine pinging?

Probably not. The pinging is being caused by something else.
