As a day trader combined with a long term hold philosophy, I welcome the extended hours. It is frustrating to see a news report from the day before and watch the stock increase in price the next morning from 8 am to 9:30 and I am powerless to do anything about it. The extended hours will allow all investors to participate, not just the institutions and those select few individuals who have access. On the positive side, there are two kinds of opportunities. One is the quick day-trade and if you are skillful you can take some quick profits. The other is the Foolish opportunity, where those quick profits are carefully placed with long term buy and hold stocks, good solid companies that can be bought at a good price. Given those two conditions, the long term stock prices won't be affected too radically by extended hours, and the short term trades are done before you leave the session. The only thing the extended hours will provide is more short term trade opportunities and there are so many of them that it is impossible to take advantage of them all. It will be of benefit to those of us who work a full day and want to come home and trade during the evening or at night, providing opportunity that only those of us who trade during the current session can take advantage.
