Subject: 401k vs. IRA - how to balance? Date: 11/19/2000 12:12 PM

I am thinking about raising my contributions to my 401k. Currently I am investing 7% of my income. My company matches 100% of the first 6%, and in addition, they put in another 5% "basic contribution", even if I invest nothing! (Good plan). So with this in mind, I have a couple of questions:

1. Does the 401k limit (I believe $10.5k) include the company contribution, or only my own contribution?
2. Is it generally better to max out my 401k contributions before going to outside investments such as an IRA or Roth IRA?

Thanks in advance for the help!
