47293 asks,

My parents, ages approx. 85 just inherited $400,000; how should it be invested. they don't need much spendable income. How about half in Vanguard Total Stock Market Portfolio and half laddered Treasuries. How do you go about doing a laddered treasury portfolio? Thanks, TCS

Since your parents don't need the money for income and will likely leave it to their heirs or charity, I'd favor a larger stock allocation. I'd also suggest using laddered CDs rather than Treasuries for the fixed income portion. The highest yielding 5 yr CD reported on is almost 1% higher than a 5 yr US Treasury note.
