the only thing I would have done different was to NOT use USAA. their fees and tradeing costs will eat up your stock account. better to have gone with some other. at $24 a trade it hurt too much.

Dude you might want to reconsider your take on USAA, they don't charge a single penny for their mutual fund purchases. Now if you have a brokerage account yes their fees are a little high, however look at the orriginal posters comment he said "S&P 500 index" this is a no load fund. Also if he tried to put his fund in a brokerage account at USAA they most likley would have told him it was not a good idea because it is too expensive.

I am constantly amazed by people that use brokerage accounts for mutual funds.
