If Congress thinks one can live on this, let's see them try! Of course, there is some validity to the argument that not every job should be expected to provide a living wage. They kid behind the counter saying "want fries with that"? I think one could argue that is just a job for high school kids to get some extra cash. It may be unrealistic to expect him to make rent and car payments and utilities and groceries. It's a kid living at home with mom and dad.

Frankly, I'm tired of wait staff making below minimum (unless that's changed from when I did it) on the assumption they "make it up with tips if they're good servers". Tips are a bonus. They should still make a decent wage. Some of them are trying to feed kids and keep a roof over their heads and buy school supplies, etc.

Anyway...received in email...a petition to increase the minimum wage.

Subject: It is time to raise the minimum wage

Dear Friend,

The need to keep pressing Congress on behalf of working-class Americans to raise the minimum wage remains urgent. At just $7.25 an hour, or roughly $15,080 per year, the current federal minimum wage is leaving millions of hardworking Americans in poverty.

While we continue to work with key allies to push the issue in the U.S. Senate, we need to build heat on the Republican leadership in the House in favor of legislation introduced by Rep. George Miller of California that increases the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 and indexes it to inflation thereafter.

It is crucial for us to generate support for Representative Miller's effort because it will provide broader momentum for increasing the minimum wage in both chambers of Congress.

I just signed a petition urging my member of Congress to cosponsor Representative Miller's legislation to raise the minimum wage. I hope you do too. You can sign the petition and find out more information at the link below.
