“What Should America Do About Gun Violence?” (Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing)

“Let’s honor the founding documents and get our priorities straight”

David Wheeler, Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Watching the testimony and reading the prepared remarks was interesting. Mr. Kopel in his 36 page written testimony spends time discussing fire arms and their history, what constitutes an assault weapon, the ease in which large capacity magazine could be made, and generally citing statistics supporting his argument nothing will work, therefore you are wasting your time.

What is disconcerting is Mr. Kopel’s use of statistics considering the NRA has made it a point to prevent independent research allowing the discussion and decisions reached to be driven by more than mere speculation and fuzzy assumptions. Nor did Mr. Kopel offer any suggestions about prevention.

It was therefore interesting and refreshing to see the testimony of David Wheeler, a parent of Benjamin Andrew Wheeler, before the Connecticut legislature’s Bipartisan Task Force on Violence and Public Safety Wednesday evening. A link to the video of the approximately six minute testimony is provided below. Watch and understand the power of what was said, then you will begin to appreciate the standing ovation by the Task Force.
