During this self awareness discovery, maybe you could give her a laminated card, same size as a CC, that is a picture of family, a graph of your retirement goals, picture of Hawaii (if that's a savings goal), a Mr. Yuk face? Anything that could serve as a "STOP and THINK about this purchase" cue for her.

Although 6 to 12 months of professional counseling is probably the best solution, I think you suggested a creative and emotionally powerful idea!
