In the general discussion of how to preserve assets for surviving spouse when one spouse must enter a nursing home, the annuity mentioned above is one strategy. Another is long term care insurance.

I find it interesting that in 2017 "Mines" was a significant sector in UK, but in the US has virtually disappeared.

You might suspect that UK is a bit more enlightened in the way it applies environmental regulations.

My mom put one of her cast iron skillets in a self cleaning oven during the clean cycle.

When cool, the skillet cracked into pieces.

Cast iron is brittle. Will crack with a hammerblow. And may not be as strong as some imagine.

Most paints will soften when heated and can be scraped off a surface. People use heat guns for this purpose or a propane torch. You can do this carefully on a wood surface as paint softens far below the charring temp of wood. On a metal surface
