<My father died 12/3/96. One stock in his estate stock is apparently rarely traded. The stock was not listed in the wall Steet Journal with a closing price for any date near 12/3/96. How can I establish the value, for tax purposes, for a future sale? The account executive at my full service broker was unable to help.>

Then he is not a full service broker, but merely a full commission broker. 8-(

<The stock is a convertable preferred from a large NYSE Company. It is TRW 4.50 CV pref. (symbol: TRWPRD).>

This is listed in the S&P Stock guide. Since I have only the August 1997 issue, it lists TRW Convertible Preferred D as $300/share (bid) for July 1997. I infer that were you to get the December one, you could get the price for late November. Or get the January one for the December price.
