I share your frustration with the lack of choices in some formal retirement plans. The two plans available to my wife(previous job & present job) are the PITS.
DRIPS offer one tremendous flexibility in the options available plus if you had an emergency one could draw on the DRIP. However unless you set up an IRA, there are no tax advantages to using DRIPS, of course you probably knew about that.
