Congratulations billjam! Know that you'd feel nervous even if you were 66 years old, as I am. I too am about to retire and I feel as uncertain as you sound. This is so even though I think I could withstand a market drop as bad as any that occurred in my lifetime. Since you will have a pension, it is likely that the worse that will happen (financially) in the event of a crash is that you will have to live modestly. Is that so terrible? That's what you should do anyway. I was born poor. I know I can live poor again (but only if I have to).

To be nervous about retirement is natural. We tend to be nervous about all major life events. Graduations, marriage, changing jobs, etc. Retirement is just another kind of job change. If you are resourceful, you'll have no trouble getting by.

Maybe you should be worried about how you will spend your time in retirement. Do you have things you look forward to in retirement? The answer better be positive. My interests require physical ability, so I am worried if I will actually be able to physically do the things I've put off for years. I can still walk 5 miles over rough terrain before lunch, but arthritis, various ripped tendons & ligaments, and weaker muscles make many activities (e.g., racket ball) impossible or, at the least, painful.

Retirement is a new adventure. Rather than "nervous," lets say were "excited and challanged."
