for Brian:

When I retired in 1993, I rolled over my 401k from work into an IRA. After 14 years participation in the 401k, the sum was about four years worth of my best annual gross pay. When I was free to pick any company I wanted to manage that money, I put it all into the Vanguard Index 500 Fund, VFINX. There it has better than tripled, with no additional contributions and no distributions, and dividends reinvested. Vanguard is the best, so far as I know, in keeping management fees down. Many people around TMF recommend VFINX. Count me among the customers who are more than satisfied with Vanguard. I recommend it to anyone who asks. While I'm at it, I recommend reading any of John Bogle's books. He founded Vanguard.
