I remember--and resented--being told to buy my employer's product when I worked in the private sector many years ago. A co-worker was told to give up her temp. tax prep. job because it made our employer look as if he wasn't paying her adequately.

I was once called on the carpet for the publication of a commentary piece in the local newspaper. The Clash had a song called "Know Your Rights" where they note that "you have the right to free speech--as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try to use it."

I wonder how many of us would worry about our employer's reaction if we were to publish our most controversial views (with names attached). My guess is that we don't press the point because we don't want to know the answer.
