a company must be able to get more out of its employees than it puts in - otherwise there is no profit.

While I don't want to start a political polemic, this is extremely naive. It falsely assumes there is some extrinisic value to what you do - for most jobs that value exists only within the context of "everything else" the company has. And it falsely assumes that "what you are paid" is determined solely by the company. If that were true, the fast food restaurants would pay minimum wage - but none of them do.
