How can it be that we have had decades of growth in GDP, most of our wives have joined the workplace, and yet there is a need for fathers to work longer and longer hours just to maintain a middle-class existence?

Something doesn't compute.


Aha! But you see, it takes so much more to "live" now. If all those of whom you speak were willing to live in tiny (to us now) houses, take very few expensive vacations in their lives, not drive big expensive new cars, not have all the lifestyle toys advertised in the various forms of media, and were also able to "trust" that the gummint and our lifelong employers would take care of us in our old age, we could still have single worker families working regular hours. Leave it to Beaver, dude.
