When I left my last employer in
1993, I rolled over my entire IRA to the Vanguard Index 500 fund in an IRA at
Vanguard. Then I transferred custody of that IRA to Schwab. Neither of these
transactions incurred any fees of any kind and the IRA has better than tripled in value
as of today.


This is a great idea if you're not going to be putting any extra money into the fund. If you are putting more money into the fund, then leave it with vanguard - no other place will let you invest for only $10 a year. (And even that gets waived when account balance goes over $10,000)
