You say you don't want to or are reluctant to take the tax "hit" by establishing a Roth conversion IRA from the proceeds of your Traditional IRA distribution.

However, have you considered converting only a portion of the Traditional IRA per year. For instance, convert 1/4th this year, 1/4th next year and so on thereby spreading the tax "hit" over several years?
