No estate tax is paid on the amount he left to his wife. The $675,000 is an exclusion on the amount the estate passes on to others. Or I am mistaken?>>
You sure did catch me fast asleep. If everything goes to the spouse, there is no estate tax regardless of the estate's size. That issue arises only at the time of the surviving spouse's demise.
