Back in 1995, when my wife needed a larger car (our 2nd was just born), I sold some EMC stock at the profitable price of $24.75/sh. I sold 800 shares, and was able to buy a new Ford Windstar. Now, 5+ years later, those same 800 shares are worth (gulp!) over $270,000 !! Had I just tightened my belt, taken out a loan for the car, it would also be paid off by now, but I would be ahead over $240,000 in my portfolio. Lesson: NEVER TRADE AN APPRECIATING ASSET (GOOD STOCK) FOR A DEPRECIATING LIABILITY (CAR). Always consider using credit "Foolishly" as an option. GB |
