What kinds of penalties would you have to pay for cashing in the 401k? It may not be such a good idea if you take a bigger hit from the penalties than you do from the interest on the credit cards. It also removes one source of money that you can access in case of hardship (disability, loss of job, etc.).

I would personally leave cashing in retirement money as a last resort, to be done only when all other sources are exhausted and I couldn't make regular payments.
