How bad is the transmission leak? Can you still drive tha auto? How much transmission fluid could you buy using the money it would cost to repair the transmission?

And you forgot to ask about how much he could afford for a new tranny after his transmission goes... YIKES!

Is the car worth the repair? Is there anything else wrong with the car? Can you walk or ride a bicycle to work instead of driving? Could you carpool with your co-workers instead of driving?

This is a repair you shouldn't let slide. Having the transmission rebuilt is a lot more than the fix you'll probably end up having.

And...if you need to charge it because you dont' have an emergency fund, we'll dance another happy dance when you get that paid off. After all, a couple hundred is a lot less to pay off than a maxed out card. This is a case when it might be better to use the card.

Hmm...as an afterthought, could you ask a family member or a friend for a small loan? My brother has had to do this since his CC debt is awful.
