We received a home (via a trust) in 2000. It and its property were in disrepair. Prior to selling it, we needed to invest a fair amount to clean up the house. Can the expenses of paint & related tools, pool maintenance (not routine care, but major cleaning and repair), and lawn/garden work (again, not just routine work)deductible? Other major expenses were extermination and carpentry that were paid for from escrow. I assume these expenses (which were required by the town to make the house saleable)are deductible? Also, this home is in California, and we needed to travel to California strictly for the purpose of getting the house cleaned up. Can the travel expenses incurred be deducted at all? Thanks in advance to all who would help us with these questions!
