Irregardless grated on my nerves, too, until one day I DID point it out and was informed (correctly) that it is, in fact, a word. Now whether it made it into the dictionary through common, albeit incorrect, usage is no longer relevant :(

Ha! The concise Oxford English Dictionary doesn't list it as a real word -- that's my gold standard for CORRECT English usage (you can't trust any of them American dictionaries, they'll include anything).
