That advice was worth just about as much as you paid for it.

One should not let the tax issue be a deciding factor in getting married. If you are both on the same page, you could minimize the effect by agreeing on the timing of WHEN you get married. If you are not on the same page, don't even bring up the subject. There is no doubt that getting married can have some nasty side effects tax-wise. At least the eternal bliss you experience will make up for any increased tax bill.
