It is based on the considerable work of one of the earlier posters in this thread, intercst, who directed you to his Retire Early Home Page and who is generally considered to be the guru of early retirement. The thing I like about this calculator is that it lets you look at multiple income streams kicking in at different points. Therefore, it will help you determine if your nest egg is enough to cover your annual income needs (which only you can define) given the fact that you may be depending solely on your nest egg from 51 - 57; will pick up a pension at 58 and then SS at 62. You can game different scenarios and see what the probability is in each case of your potfolio surviving.
