My understanding is that limits on Roth IRA: you can contribute $2000 for 2001, and $3000 for 2002. So potentially you could contribute $5000 early 2002 (due to having until April 2002 for 2001 contributions)?

You understand correctly, assuming you meet the AGI requirements for respective year.
