The advantages to me that I see are the cost avoidance of postage and printing the forms and PERHAPS quicker processing by the IRS.
My experience from the past 2 years is way quicker everything. I haven't paid to do it, either. I can't remember what the deal was 2 years ago but TurboTax was free through Vanguard and maybe the filing was as well. Last years, TurboTax came with a boatload of rebate or free items including at least one electronic filing.
My refund was direct deposited something like 3 weeks after I filed(since they owed me money, I filed by the end of Feb).
I think it's wonderful and I do think it should be free all around. They have to be saving on the data entry and mail handling pieces.
