really though - sometimes a call to investor relations at the company will solve the problem. If that doesnt work then you may be able to find the quotes for the stock during the year of purchase and hopefully there will not be a wild fluctuation; you could then use a mean average of the trading range for that year.

I have seen other people use 50% of the sales price as a best estimate -- they can only be so wrong in either direction with that method.
