The film "Kandahar" recently got a lot of attention as a look at the horrors of life in Taliban Afghanistan. I saw it, it's quite striking-- I've never seen anything quite like the scene where a bunch of land-mine victims on crutches chase after prosthetic legs dropping on parachutes into the middle of the desert... I highly recommend it.

Anyone who's seen the film, though, might find this piece from Financial Times correspondent Andrew Jack-- their Moscow bureau chief, just back from Afghanistan--an interesting read:

Looks like the film is quietly a kind of apologia for the Iranian regime, and even includes in its cast an American known to have murdered one of their political opponents.

Guess there's just no taking things at face value, especially movies that dazzle you with unique images (that you wish were unearthly) and pass themselves off as near-documentaries...

Anyone else seen the film? have comments?
