Unless you have earned income, you can't invest in an IRA. I apologize if my comment is obvious, but you did say you were in college.

If you do have a job, then you need to have actually earned $1,000 to be able to put $1,000 in your IRA in any given year. I only mention this because some students have very part-time and irregular incomes.

Next step would be to shop around and get prospectus and information from the different brokerages that offer IRAs. I know nothing about Ameritrade's options, so I can't help you there. T. Rowe Price is a good one, and I invite you to investigate their choices. Lots of different funds to choose from.
