My wife just received a check from the federal gov't. In the cryptic lettering and numbering across the top is the word "refund". There's no cover letter, and we've received no notice of a refund. Interestingly we file jointly, all the taxes we've paid come from my checking account, yet the check was made out to my wife's name.
Is there a known refund going out right now due to some tax cut?
Do I have to sit on hold for an hour to talk to an IRS rep who won't know what the heck it's about.
Or pay an accountant more than the amount of the check to figure out what it's for?
