You are seeing your net worth go down because you are ignoring the value of the intangible asset that he is "purchasing": a law degree. My MBA ran me about $70k, but I believe that my net worth increased as I was in school (i.e. my degree is worth more than I paid for it).

You are absolutely right. Yet another reason why I have to remind myself to step back and look at the full picture, not just the sidebar on the Quicken program.
