Well, since you asked, I thought I would mention that I followed up on an unrelated bill for an ER visit. With all this talk, I decided to go back and review some of my own bills and EOBs and found a couple that should have been paid a couple of months back.
When I called the hospital's billing offices -- they out-source to a company that specializes in that kind of thing -- I asked them whether or not they would try to collect against me for one of my spouse's medical bill, given that my SSN was on the insurance. They told me there was no way they would try to collect against me unless I had either been the patient or signed as a guarantor during admission.
Not a legal opinion by any means, but it certainly helps buttress my suspicions about financial liability.
