But the gas company is an awful example. They would chase you because they had a contractual agreement with you. The fact that the check was drawn on a closed account simply voids your payment to the gas company, leaving your original contractual obligation intact.

My problem is that I don't believe the provider ever established a contractual relationship with me. They may have with my XSO, but not with me. If I later find I somehow obligated myself to bill, I'm sure I'll change my tune; but at this point I've seen no evidence to contradict my opinion.



You are not normally this obtuse. The gas company example was for lizmonster, as an equivalent to her example of contractually agreeing to pay for goods received, but using an out of date CC.
