Never been much of a car person, but here goes:
1987 toyota pickup - had been extremely abused before I got it. Two junkyard doors, neither of which matched each other or the body; hood held closed with a cotter pin and a bungie cord; headlights that turned on and off by putting in or removing a fuse. Had it for 10k miles before I totalled it.
1980 Dodge Diplomat - elderly POS. Briefly replaced the pickup until I traded it in for $300.
1995 Escort wagon - Bought new and still have it. This is my daily driver 2.5 miles each way to the commuter train lot. Has been cheap to run, maintain and insure, but its starting to rust. Probably will become unsafe due to rust long before it gives in mechanically.
1996 Cavalier coupe - Bought new. Nice enough car, but we sold it when we moved back to NYC and didn't need two cars any more.
2003 Subaru Legacy - Wagon we bought new last year. Very happy with this car so far. Bought when we moved to the burbs and needed a second chariot, plus kids are on the way.
I'm hoping to get two or three more years out of the Escort if it doesn't rust out before then. When it is ready to pass on, I will likely buy something big that is two or three years old, has depreciated rapidly, and has good crash test scores. A taurus or similar should fit the bill. If I switch my commute to a lengthy drive, I'd probably get another Subaru, though.
