Yep. In my 10 years of driving, I've had:
'77 VW Beetle - white (bought in 1996 for about $800)
'87 BMW 325e - dark blue (bought in 2001 for about $3000)
All of them paid cash. I did a spreadsheet some time ago, detailing all the money I've spent on cars in my life (the cars themselves, gas, service, repairs, insurance, parking, etc), and I hardly got to $20K.
By the way, I love my BMW, and I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off. For a 1987, it's pretty well equipped: leather seats, A/C, alloy wheels, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof. It was pretty well maintained when I bought it, just had to do some normal long-term repairs (the car was already 15 years old!), but now it works like a charm, day-in and day-out.
Lately, I've been toying with the idea of buying a BMW E39 M5 in some years, when prices fall down to reasonable levels (~$15K). Considering that I can get a nice 1993 M5 for about $11K today (according to KBB at least), it shouldn't be too difficult to get a 1999 M5 for $15K in 2008, which is only four years away.
