My retirement accounts are 100% common stocks. If you're an investment geek who like to analyze securities, and are disciplined enough to minimize your trading/trading costs (I wouldn't recommend blanket stop limits), this a valid way to invest.

Individual securities become more attractive as your portfolio grows, since mutual fund expense ratios increase accordingly.
