I just replaced my old stained, scratched, and peeling laminate with granite tile countertops which only cost about $6 or $7 /sq ft. and that includes all supplies including the tile, thinset, backerboard, and grout. Stone doesn't have to be very expensive. Granted it takes longer than putting in laminate but it's a lot more durable in every way and I think it just looks better under the lights.
