db notes: The idea that we can impose American values on those who have no wish for, and may not admire, those values, is appalling. When someone purports to know what god wants, I cringe. Well, now that I managed to skew this thread OT - I'm not much of a history buff, but one of the quote that left an impression was McKinley's speech announcing the annexation of the Phillipines. I can't find my old college book, but to paraphrase: "As I pondered and prayed over what to do with the Phillipines, it came to me that we have no choice but to Westernize and Christianize these savage people." |
