Thanks for your explanation, Keith. Your example of the elderly man is exactly what I'm attempting to avoid. Having a "boat load" of EE's myself, I have been cashing in just enough to nudge up to but prevent me from entering the next higher tax bracket (27%, I believe). At age 62 and now on social security it has reduced my window of opportunity somewhat but the last of the EE's don't mature until 2023 and that should be more than enough time for me to complete my plan. Granted, it's a very nice problem to have but a problem never the less.
