The Chunichi Dragons began their history in a not so auspicious fashion, losing far more games than they won in the first half of the season. However, as the second half dawned so did the pitching. With the help of three key waiver wire pickups, the Dragons were able to avoid demotion in the first season.
As the playoffs began, the pitching continued to be excellent. As upsets dotted the landscape in the early rounds, the Dragons ended up playing the Philadelphia Presidents (the 16th place team) in the championship game held last night at Dragons Field, where a monsoon the previous night left a large pond in right field. Like the postmen of yore, the Dragons took the field and behind the superb pitching of Chuck Seaver were able to clinch their first championship trophy.
The players are very happy with how the team gelled down the stretch and in the playoffs. With the hopeful additions to both pitching and offense, next year looks promising.
