Oooops, another thing I forgot to mention, and some folks forget to take into account--ALTERNATIVE MINIMUM TAX. If one sells equities expecting to pay LTCG rates, but doesn't have enough ordinary taxable income-BLAM! (This could probably happen more easily during retirement.)
