The underfunding is huge. For SS to be properly funded, each account would have to have enough real money when a person retires to fund an annuity on which the person would retire. If you are not close to retirement, then it would have to have enough money to where when you made the contributions until you retire, then you could be projected to have enough money for that annuity.
