Hey, JLP, what about letting social security invest in a total stock market index fund rather than US treasuries. Mightn't that cure the unfunding before 2042? I understand this is really a political rather than financial issue.

The problem is that the government is too busy spending the Social Security tax revenue as fast as it comes in. Politicians have no problem squandering what is left over after Social Security benefits have been paid.
