It's so nice to read something from someone who is totally satisfied with their life and financial situation without obsessing about it!

I lurk here at times, so forgive me for jumping in.

If I were in your shoes, I would max out your 401(K) for the tax benefits, if nothing else. Crunch some numbers to make sure you will have enough for college. You don't say how many kids you have or how old they are, but saving $6000/year for them may or may not be enough for your situation. The home upgrades make sense, too, if you aren't over-improving for your area. You will enjoy your house more and it won't be money down the drain.
