"Hopefully, someone else will find this useful in something akin to that way".
It was useful indeed!!!! I have been a long-time DRIP investor (ok 4 years, but that's long given I'm a wee 23!) and I went perusing the Fool site for anything related to deep discount brokers which now hold interest for me. My motive for doing this was that I wanted to open an online Roth IRA account and be able to control the transactions by myself. I knew sharebuilder allowed you to buy partial shares in full dollar amounts for 4$ a trade and this was an attractive option to me.
However, I had no idea there was a limited stock selection and you would get strapped with such hideous fees upon selling! Ick! I am also turned off to the site because they seem to continuously have problems with their Gain and Loss Tracker (I have heard this from numerous sources). This is not a healthy sign.I also don't like what I have learned about the trading schedule....I thought that when they touted the slogan "real time trades", that I could buy at any hour of any business day and my transaction would be carried through immediately or atleast that day before the close. I'm looking to trade on my time, not theirs! So, needless to say, I was a little disgruntled over that issue as well.
I was also curious about the subtleties behind the Buy and Hold site. After doing my research and reading your posts, I have determined that this is not the place to park my hard earned petunias. Although it may become attractive in the future, the 14.95 per month is not a good fit for me. With my inconsistent income (currently bartending )and trying to pay back student loans I cannot make a contribution every month. But I certainly will keep this in mind as a future option.
For now, I am going to see what Vanguard and Fidelity have to offer for Roth IRA programs and how much trades cost, etc. Thank you for your informative posts and let me know if you have any ideas for me!
